The Youth Leadership Council is an organized group of teens with representation from each of the Porter County school corporations. They are led by the Council DFC grant coordinator that provides leadership tools to organized and apply prevention strategies aimed at their peers. Recently the team met at the Indiana Dunes to participate in the 3 Dune Challenge. After completing the course, they gathered for a leisurely lunch at the shoreline and discussed their plans for the Youth Fest.
The annual Youth Fest held each summer attracts teens from all over the county to gather and enjoy a substance free event. Creativity is encouraged to create a festival that appeals to the rural, suburban and urban demographics in the county. Typically, the main draw is the music with local bands headlining the stages. Other attractions include but are not limited to art demonstrations, contests of strength, games, yoga, meditation and food trucks to serve up all the summertime favorites.
Critical to the success of the YLC is the succession plan that allows the freshman and sophomores to be mentored by the junior and senior members. To implement a successful plan, interested youth are asked to attend a week-long training conference in Washington, DC learning effective prevention strategies, international networking with youth coalitions and developing a tool box of leadership skills. This opportunity is offered each year in February to interested members. Additionally, a mid-year conference is held for students – this year we will be traveling to Dallas.
